Puducherry, April 9 -- Polling to elect the 30-member Territorial Assembly in Puducherry began at 7.00 AM amid tight security and a turn out of 17.14 per cent was recorded in the first two hours.

Election Commission of India officials said 17.14 per cent voters of the total 9.53 lakh voters have exercised their franchise in the first two hours till 9.00 AM to decide the fate of 294 candidates, of which 40 were women.

As the mercury level has been rising steadily over the last few days, enthusiastic voters turned out at the polling booths in large numbers right from the morning to beat the searing heat wave to exercise their democratic right.
