NEW DELHI, Feb. 10 -- The Indian government announced on Friday that two former prime ministers, Chaudhary Charan Singh and P. V. Narasimha Rao, as well as renowned agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan, will be honored with the country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.

Singh served as prime minister from July 28, 1979 to January 14, 1980.

Rao, associated with the Indian National Congress party, served as prime minister from June 21, 1991 to May 16, 1996.

Swaminathan is popularly known as the father of the Green Revolution in India.
