Naogaon, July 26 -- Thousands of farmers are staring at a bleak future after Atrai and Chhoto Jamuna rivers burst their banks, flooding several thousand hectares of farmland in the district.

The affected croplands are in Manda, Dhamoirhat, Atrai and Raninagar upazilas. Department of Agricultural Extension's Additional Deputy Director Mahabubar Rahman said he did not have any information about government assistance for flood-hit farmers.

Vast swathes of Aush and Aman paddy fields, vegetables and seedbeds have gone under water. The damage to crops in flood-hit regions will push up the prices of perishables and rice.
