India, Jan. 14 -- Thanks to the new Z-Morh tunnel, Sonmarg (also spelt Sonamarg) will now be accessible to tourists all year round. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the tunnel on January 13, 2025, opening the road to the public. The two-lane road stretching 6.5 kilometres connects Gagangair and Sonmarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Kashmir's Z-Morh tunnel: Key details
Located above 8,650 feet, the tunnel enhances connectivity between Srinagar and Sonmarg. Its unique name comes from the z-shaped stretch of road it has replaced. During the winter, heavy snowfall blocks the road to Sonmarg, making it an avalanche-prone zone. The tunnel has a 7.5-metre-wide passage to enable emergency escape.
