Australia, July 24 -- Australia based DPIRD has secured contract from Grains Research and Development Corporation for During the 2024 season outbreaks of flag smut in wheat and loose smut in barley occurred across Western Australia's grain belt. Loose smut persists across seasons as dormant mycelium within infected seed, impacting both commercial and retained seed. In contrast, flag smut primarily spreads through contaminated soil. Despite seed treatments being the most effective control measure for these diseases, substantial outbreaks were reported by growers despite good seed dressing coverage and other hygiene practics.. The value of the contract is worth 374,381.70 AUD.
