Manila, Feb. 12 -- The United Nations Tourism and the Philippines' Department of Tourism (DOT) on Wednesday mourned the passing of Chef Margarita Fores, describing her as a "trailblazer" who reshaped the way the world perceives Philippine gastronomy.

"Chef Margarita championed the Philippines' rich culinary heritage, not only as a celebrated chef but as a fierce advocate for the promotion of local food culture," Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said in a statement.

The official recognized her support for the DOT's efforts to integrate gastronomy as a pillar of the country's tourism strategy.
