Manila, Jan. 22 -- The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is investigating reports that self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato has left the Philippines using a passport with a new identity.

In a statement Wednesday, the DFA said it found no passport and biometrics records under the name "Edgar Matobato".

Any application under a new or assumed identity will be flagged by the DFA system, and a Philippine passport will not be issued, if there is already an existing record and biometrics in the database.

On the possibility that it may be a case of fraudulent application, the DFA warned that such act is a "serious offense punishable under the Passport Law".
