Mumbai, May 13 -- Cigarette-to-soap maker ITC Ltd., appointed Sanjiv Suri as the company's chairman after the demise of Yogesh Chander Deveshwar, who died on 11 May. Deveshwar passed away after a prolonged illness at a hospital in Gurugram.

Puri will assume his duties, as both chairman and managing director, effective today, said ITC in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Puri, who has replaced one of India's longest-serving corporate chiefs, is an Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur alum. He joined the company 33 years ago back in 1986. Deveshwar was mentoring Puri to potentially assume both roles as a managing director as well as chairman, according to The Economic Times.
