Woman 'sarpanch' among 4 arrested under Arms Act
PATNA, Jan. 15 -- Four persons, including a woman sarpanch from Khagaria, were arrested by Begusarai police in connection with the illegal possession of arms and ammunition, officials said.
Begusarai Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish said that the police had received information that some anti-social elements were entering Begusarai from Khagaria in a Fortuner SUV bearing a Maharashtra registration number and carrying illegal firearms.
Acting on the tip-off, teams of the Special Task Force (STF), district intelligence unit (DIU) and Lakho police station launched a vehicle-checking drive near Shahpur Toll Plaza on NH-31.
As the suspected SUV reached the spot, the police team intercepted and surrounded it.
During frisking, the police recovered a pistol, two magazines, 16 live cartridges and six mobile phones from the occupants.
The SP said that despite her arrest late on Tuesday, an MLA attempted to secure her release.
Those arrested were identified as Preeti Jha (43), sarpanch of Madhavpur panchayat under Parbatta police station in Khagaria district; her son Prince Kumar (21); Subodh Singh (42); and Abdul Rahim Khan (50) of Uttar Pradesh. Rahim is currently stated to be residing on CST Road in Kurla, West Mumbai.
"It is also being probed why a middle-aged man, Rahim, was travelling with them. Efforts are on to ascertain the motive behind carrying the weapons," the SP said....
