PATNA, July 29 -- Urban domestic power consumers in Bihar are assured to get a minimum monthly discount of Rs.550, effective July, following chief minister Nitish Kumar's decision on July 17 to give 125 units of free power to all domestic consumers, said power officials on Monday. Given the state government's already announced subsidy of Rs.3.30 per unit (kW/h) for the first 100 units of electricity and Rs.3.43 per unit for consumption above 100 units on a tariff of Rs.7.42 per unit for the first 100 units and Rs.8.95 per unit beyond consumption of 100 units fixed by the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission for 2025-26, the state government's decision to make electricity free up to 125 units will translate into a minimum monthly saving of Rs.550 for urban domestic consumers. For rural domestic consumers, however, the minimum monthly saving will be Rs.306.25, as they are already getting a higher monthly subsidy of Rs.4.97 per unit on the BERC approved tariff of Rs.7.42 per unit. For Kutir Jyoti consumers or rural below poverty line families, the minimum monthly saving will be Rs.282.25, as they avail of an even higher government subsidy of Rs.5.45 per unit for the first 50 units and Rs.4.97 per unit for consumption beyond 50 units on the BERC approved tariff of Rs.7.42 per unit. As part of the pre-poll sop, the state government has rendered infructuous its first subsidy slab of Rs 3.30 per unit for the first 100 units for urban domestic consumers. Now, energy consumption beyond 120 units, will attract a flat rate of Rs 5.52 per unit, including the subsidy of Rs 3.43 per unit. Similarly, for Kutir Jyoti consumers, it has rendered infructuous the subsidy slab of Rs.5.45 for first 50 units. They will now be billed at a flat rate of Rs.2.45, including a subsidy of Rs.4.97 per unit for power consumed beyond 120 units. The CM's decision, ratified by the state cabinet on July 18, will benefit 1.86 crore domestic consumers in Bihar, including 60 lakh prepaid consumers....
