Top Maoist with Rs.1-cr bounty dies in custody
RANCHI, April 4 -- Prashant Bose, the 80-year-old top leader of the banned CPI (Maoist) who carried a bounty of Rs.1 crore, died on Friday at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after his health deteriorated in prison in the wee hours.
Known by the alias 'Kishan da,' Bose was a foundational figure in the Maoist movement, serving as a member of the central committee and the politburo. He had been lodged in Birsa Munda Jail since his arrest in 2021.
Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Ranjan confirmed the veteran leader's passing. "Bose's health condition, who was lodged in Birsa Munda Jail, deteriorated this morning, but he died during treatment. "The exact cause of his death is yet to be ascertained," Ranjan told reporters.
Jail IG Sudarshan Mandal further clarified the circumstances, stating that the "reason behind the death could be age and illness."
Bose was considered the mastermind behind more than 100 violent incidents across multiple states, including Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal. His death marks the end of an era for the Maoist insurgency in the East, where he had operated for decades from the Saranda forests.
