Tejashwi blames NDA for 'obstructing' reservation laws
PATNA, Feb. 23 -- RJD working national president and Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Sunday alleged that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar led NDA government and the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) having created obstacles in implementation of the enhanced reservation limit citing it as a reason why 16% of hiked quota was not benefitting people from OBCs, EBCs, SCs/STs to get place in educational institutions and state government jobs.
"When we were in power as constituent in the Grand Alliance (GA) or Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, we carried a caste survey. Thereafter we had brought two reservation laws to enhance the reservation limit to 65% for other backard classes( OBCs), extemely backward classes ( EBCs), scheduled caste/ tribe. But 16% of people are still not getting benefit of enhanced reservation owing to legal tangles failure of the NDA government to put the amended laws in the ninth schedule for immunity from judicial review," Yadav said. He said that the GA government had brought the two laws for benefitting large number of people from poor and other marginalised sections into the mainstream.
The opposition leader was speaking at a party-sponsored event at Millar School in Patna to mark the 649th birth anniversary of poet-saint and social reformist Sant Shiromani Guru Ravidas. Yadav alleged that the BJP was against the reservation policy for deprived and oppressed sections.
In November 2023 (when GA was in power), the state legislature had passed two laws, The Bihar (In admission in Educational Institutions) Reservation(Amendment) Act, 2023 and The Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other Backward Classes) (Amendment) Act, 2023 enhancing the quota for OBCs, EBCs,SCs and STs to 65% from the previous limit of 50% in state educational institutions and state government jobs. The GA government in which RJD along with JD(U) and left parties were constituents lasted from August 2022 to January 2024.
However, the two laws were scrapped by the Patna High Court on June 20,2024 calling the two legislations as unconstitutional. The Bihar government has gone into appeal against the High Court's decision in Supreme Court . The apex court is hearing the matter .
The opposition leader stated that the RJD would continue to fight for the implementation of enhanced reservation for the backward and scheduled caste/tribe. " We will continue to fight for the enhancement of reservation . Around 25000 people are not getting the benefit of governemnt jobs owing to the non-implementation of the hiked quota for OBCs and other marginalised sections," Yadav said.
Paying rich tributes to Guru Ravidas, Yadav said that his party would put pressure on the state government to incorporate the ideals , principles of social reformers like Babasaheb Dr B R Ambedkar, Sant Ravidas and Kabir in the school syllabus in the state.
"In Bihar today, law and order has nosedived and the mafia elements are getting patronage from the state government. The government has lost its credibility," Yadav said, taking potshots at the state government over rising crime incidents.
Others who prominently spoke on the occasion were Shivchandra Ram, former minister, Alok Kumar Mehta, MLA, Lalbabu Ram and former minister Surendra Ram....
