Strayed tusker runs wild in Rohtas
SASARAM, March 3 -- A wild tusker, that strayed into the highlands of Sone River situated in Rohtas block area of Rohtas district, has created panic among the villagers and cattle herders with its violent behaviour.
The tusker has killed over six cattle, including two buffaloes, two cows and two calves belonging to farmers Shiv Pujan Chaudhary, Anil Yadav, Sunil Chaudhary and Anil Chaudhary in Kushdihra highland area. Several pets have been injured. It has also destroyed and damaged the borewells, houses, huts, handpumps and trampled the vegetable, wheat, pulse and oilseed crops in the area, locals said. People in the villages situated on the banks of the Sone River are forced to stay awake and keep vigil throughout the night. Villagers are trying to drive the elephant away from residential areas with the help of torches, firecrackers and other means. The constant attacks are posing a serious threat to their livelihoods. The villagers have demanded immediate security arrangements and compensation for the loss of cattle and crops from the administration, they said.
A forest department team led by range officer Shashi Bhushan Prasad Sinha is consistently tracking the animal and unsuccessfully trying to drive him back to the Jharkhand forests. The elephant's frequently changing locations, dense bushes and tall grass are hampering the team....
