Monks, devotees from 22 countries take part in sacred 'Jethiyan-Venuvan Dhamma Walk'
BODH GAYA, Dec. 14 -- Retracing the historic route taken by Lord Buddha after his Enlightenment, monks, nuns and a large number of devotees from 22 countries, wrapped in colourful traditional attires, undertook the sacred Jethiyan-Venuvan Dhamma Walk on concluding day of the 20th International Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony 2025, on Saturday.
Buddha met Magadh empire king Bimbisara at Jethiyan (ancient Lattivana) before proceeding to Rajgir, an encounter that led to the king's conversion and the establishment of key Buddhist sites such as Venuvan (Bamboo Grove) and Gridhakuta (Vulture Peak), according to Buddhist tradition.
The walk marks the beginning of a continuing endeavour to retrace the Buddha's footsteps and reaffirms a collective commitment to propagate the timeless spiritual essence of the Buddha's teachings. At the beginning of the walk all the monks and nuns and devotees gathered in the historic ground of Jethiyan, (BTMC) secretary Mahashweta Maharathi said.
The Dhamma Walk, jointly organised by Nav Nalanda Mahavihara, the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC), Light of Buddha Dharma Foundation, International Tipitaka Chanting Council and 17 Buddhist organizations in the country, commemorates this sacred journey documented by ancient travellers like Xuanzang, Maharathi said.
