Man dies during buffalo fight in Jharkhand, son injured
Jamshedpur, Jan. 14 -- A 55-yr-old man died after an angry buffalo knocked him down during a buffalo fight at Joba football ground in Beldih panchayat under Bodam police station (PS) in East Singhbhum district on the occasion of pre-Makar Sankranti festivities, police said on Tuesday.
"Buffalo fight is illegal and the matter will be investigated. It was completely a wrongful act. During inquiry, details about the organisers will be ascertained and actions under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960 taken against them," Karn Satyarthi, East Singhbhum district deputy commissioner (DC), told the media on Tuesday.
According to the police, 55-yr-old Subhash Karmakar's 15-yr-old son Sagar Karmakar was undergoing treatment with a broken leg at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur.
"There was no prior information about the buffalo fight and the organisers had not taken any permission either. The village committee had organised the buffalo fight clandestinely. The body of Subhash was sent for post mortem. Investigation is ongoing into the committee and its members," Manoranjan Kumar, Bodam PS officer-in-charge (OC), told the media.
According to locals, the buffalo fight was ongoing amid heavy crowds and cheering when the buffalo, which seemed to be losing the fight, ran through the crowd in a fit of rage, picking up Subhash Karmakar by its horns and then throwing him down onto the ground.
"His son Sagar got injured trying to save his father. Both were rushed to MGMMCH where doctors declared Subhash Karmakar brought dead and Sagar is undergoing treatment for his broken leg. The incident happened after buffalo fights between four pairs of buffalos had ended without any untoward incident," a villager said on condition of anonymity.
Later, Bodam police reached the ground and dispersed the crowd before shutting down the buffalo fights late Monday afternoon....
