BETTIAH, Jan. 28 -- Patahi police on Monday evening arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly throwing acid on the face of a 21-year-old woman after she refused his proposal to enter into a love affair in a village of East Champaran district. The accused is said to be a close relative of the victim. Confirming this, Kumar Chandan, sub divisional police officer (SDPO), Pakaridayal, said that the arrest was following the receipt of the complaint from the hospital, where the girl was admitted for treatment after the acid attack. "The arrested man has confessed to have committed the crime. Initially, even the girl's family members attempted to hush up the matter," the SDPO said. According to police, the accused, a close relative of the victim, carried out the attack following her repeated rejection of his attempts to initiate a relationship near Patahi in East Champaran on Sunday night. The victim (name withheld) sustained serious burn injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The police said that the girl was sleeping inside her house with her mother when one of her distant relatives forcibly entered the door, threw acid on her and escaped, the police said. Patahi police station SHO Babban Kumar said the man had allegedly been repeatedly sending messages requesting her to initiate a relationship. "But when the girl blocked his number, he came with acid and threw it on her leaving her injured," said the SHO.
