FIR against 71 named persons under SC, ST Act in Darbhanga village triggers tension
DARBHANGA, Feb. 6 -- A First Information Report (FIR) lodged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and various sections of BNS in Bihar's Darbhanga district has triggered widespread concern reportedly after members of an entire village community were named as accused following a wage-related dispute that later turned violent.
The FIR, registered at Kusheshwar Asthan police station, relates to an incident in Harinagar on January 31. Complainant, Ashrafi Paswan, has so far named 71 persons in the case and also mentioned 100 to 150 unidentified accused, effectively implicating a large section of the village's Brahmin population.
Police said the conflict stemmed from a long-pending financial dispute over construction work carried out by a member of a Dalit family.
According to information available with the police, Vikram Paswan had worked on the construction of a house belonging to the sister of Hemkant Jha, for which nearly Rs.1.5 lakh had allegedly remained unpaid for five years.
Tensions surfaced on the morning of January 30 when Vikram, complainant's son demanded the pending wages and was allegedly stopped on the way, leading to an argument. A village-level meeting was later held the same day to resolve the issue, but it ended without consensus. The situation escalated the following night into a violent clash, leaving more than 10 people injured.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with provisions of the SC/ST Act. The complainant alleged collective assault, caste-based abuse and slurs and criminal intimidation.
Police sources confirmed that the application listed the large number of Brahmin community of the village as accused. Following the registration of the FIR, several male residents reportedly left the village fearing arrest, heightening anxiety and fuelling allegations of indiscriminate naming of accused.
Villagers have also claimed that several individuals named in the FIR had not lived in Harinagar for years, alleging that names were added without preliminary verification....
