DARBHANGA, Feb. 1 -- The avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has been officially confirmed in Bihar's Darbhanga district following the large-scale death of crows, prompting the district administration and the animal husbandry department to go on high alert. The worst-affected area is Bhigo locality under Ward No. 31 within Darbhanga Municipal Corporation limits, where thousands of crows have been found dead over the past few days. Similar incidents have also been reported from other parts of the district. According to local councillors, the death toll could be as high as 10,000 crows. Officials said samples of dead crows were collected and sent on January 12 to a laboratory in Bhopal and Kolkata for testing soon after the first cases of mass crow deaths were reported from the Bhigo area the same day.
