Court frames charge against J'khand ex-cm
Jamshedpur, Jan. 29 -- The Chaibasa MP-MLA court has framed charges against former Jharkhand chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Seraikela, Champai Soren, and two co-accused, in a 32-year-old case under the 1908 Explosive Substances Act, during the Jharkhand separate statehood movement in 1993, lawyers close to the development said on Wednesday.
The case, registered at the Gamharia police station (PS), is related to the alleged use of explosive materials during the bandh called by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) demanding a separate Jharkhand state in 1993. Champai switched from the JMM to the BJP in 2024.
"The Chaibasa MP-MLA court on Tuesday framed charges against Champai Soren and two co-accused, Shyam Nandan Tudu and Arun Mahato, who are still alive, under sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, and sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (suppression and destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Now, a regular trial will begin in the case," Amresh Saw, senior advocate, told the media on Wednesday.
Saw further said Champai Soren appeared in person before the court and pleaded not guilty.
"Champai Soren pleaded not guilty, saying that all the allegations against him are baseless. He also expressed his readiness to face the trial, saying that he has complete faith and trust in the judicial process," Saw added....
