Controversy erupts after rats bite toes of patient at NMCH
PATNA, May 21 -- Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Health Minister Mangal Pandey after a disabled patient's toes were allegedly bitten by rats while he was asleep in the Orthopaedics Department of Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna.
The controversy erupted after RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav posted on X: "In Patna's NMCH, a specially-abled patient's toes were bitten by rats. Recently, rats had gnawed at the eye of a deceased person in the same hospital, yet no action was taken against anyone." He accused the government of failing to maintain the healthcare system, saying, "Health Minister Mangal Pandey has ruined the system we had improved and nurtured during our 17-month tenure."
Dr Om Prakash, head of the Orthopaedics Department, confirmed the incident and has written to NMCH Superintendent Dr Rashmi Prasad, urging immediate measures to tackle the rat menace and improve waste management. "We have come to know about the incident. It has been brought to the notice of the medical superintendent," he said.
Superintendent Dr Rashmi Prasad said that no formal complaint has been received directly from the patient but acknowledged receiving the department head's letter. "I have assured that action will be taken if anyone is found guilty. I also discussed the issue with the in-charge of BMSICL's repair work, instructing them to install mesh on windows and drainage outlets," she said.
Sources confirmed that the incident took place on Saturday night, and the patient, Awadesh Kumar, became aware of the injuries when he woke up on Sunday morning. "I noticed my toes were bleeding. Rats had bitten my right foot while I was asleep. My family members saw it too and informed the nurses and other staff. Rats have been creating havoc here," he said....
