Bihar AIMIM chief's remark on lowering loudspeaker volume draws sharp reactions
KISHANGANJ, Feb. 3 -- AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) Bihar president Akhtarul Iman's guarded objection to the use of loudspeakers for Azaan (Call for Islamic prayer) has snowballed into controversy among a section of Muslims, while environmentalists have declared it a noble initiative to curb noise pollution.
Iman while talking to local media persons here on Saturday had raised objections over using loudspeakers for Azaan and urged to ensure that sound levels did not exceed permissible limits, particularly in residential and silence zones. "I think, the use of loudspeakers in Azaan should be confined within only that area from where Muslims go to that particular Mosque to offer namaz.
"Sometimes, we see that the sound of loudspeakers reach beyond two to three kilometres while Muslims within half km reach the mosque to offer namaz," Iman said while stressing the need for reducing the volume of loudspeakers.
"I want the people from other communities to observe this but I think Muslims must start this practice to set an example for others," Iman, who was accorded Y category security on January 28, said.
Iman, a party MLA from Amour assembly in Purnea district also raised concerns over the manner of living of Muslims and said some sort of restrictions must be placed on some traditions such as late night feasting which, he claimed, affected health adversely. He reiterated that Muslims must set an example for others and claimed that he was a true Muslim.
Reacting sharply a local identified as Mohd Zameel said, "Playing loudspeakers at high volume from the mosques has long been a tradition to intimate Muslims to reach there to offer namaz." He declared Iman and his party 'B team of BJP. He alleged that Iman was passing such comments only after the government accorded him Y category security cover.
Another local Mohd Intkam Parveen said, "Such statements are aimed at gaining political mileage before the West Bengal assembly polls."
Yet another local Mohd Munna accused Iman of dividing Hindu-Muslim fraternity in the area. "Some leaders attempt to sabotage Hindu-Muslim unity and hence give such statements," he alleged....
