SUPAUL, March 28 -- Five teachers of a government school returning from an educational trip were arrested after they tested positive for alcohol consumption on the Indo-Nepal border in Supaul district during a breathalyser test on Thursday evening, officials said. Bihar has been a dry state since 2016. The arrested teachers are from a government school in Madhepura. All of them have been placed under suspension, and departmental proceedings have been initiated against them. Taking strong note of the incident, Supaul and Madhepura district magistrates (DMs) have directed the district education officers (DEOs) of the concerned districts to conduct a probe. Supaul DM Sawan Kumar said, "We have sent suspension letters to the Madhepura DEO, where the teachers are posted." Madhepura DM Abhishek Ranjan said, "The DEO has been directed to conduct a probe, and stringent action will be taken against the teachers." Confirming the arrests, excise inspector Sanjay Priyadarshi, posted at the Bhimnagar check post on the India-Nepal border, said, "During a routine checking drive, five people tested positive. The five people were travelling in a school bus." The arrested people have been identified as Siwansh Kumar alias Shakti Shaman, Deepnarayan Ram, English Kumar, Mitthu Kumar (all four from Madhepura district) and Dhirendra Kumar of Khagaria district. "The arrested people are said to be government school teachers who were on an educational trip with schoolchildren under MBDY (Mukhyamantri Bihar Darshan Yojna)," he said, adding, "After formalities, we have sent them into judicial custody." The arrested teachers are posted at Upgraded Middle School, Parihari, under Kumarkhand block of Madhepura district. There were 40 schoolchildren travelling with them. MBDY is an educational initiative by the Bihar government to take students from elementary and secondary schools on field trips to historical, cultural and scenic sites.
