3 accused held for bizman's kidnapping shot in firefight
JAMSHEDPUR, Jan. 31 -- Police have arrested six people from Bihar's Nalanda, Gayaji and Patna districts in connection with the January 13 kidnapping of Jamshedpur industrialist Kairav Gandhi, officials said on Friday. Three of the accused were injured after one of them allegedly snatched a carbine from a police team and opened fire while attempting to flee, triggering an encounter, they added.
Police said that the encounter occurred near the Horse Riding School on Sai Temple Road in the Circuit House locality in Jamshedpur, around 2:30 am on Thursday, when the police were attempting to recover firearms that the suspects had allegedly hidden in a bush near the Sai Temple.'
Police identified the arrested accused as Guddu Singh alias Singh Sahab, Upendra Singh, Arjun Singh, Mohammad Imran, Ramiz Raja and Mohan Kumar Prasad.
"During interrogation, the arrested kidnappers confessed that they had hidden firearms near the Sai Temple during the kidnapping of Kairav Gandhi. When the police party took them to the site to recover the firearms, one of them snatched the carbine from constable Haripado Mahato and tried to flee by opening fire upon the police party. The police fired back in self-defence. Guddu Singh, Mohammad Imran and Ramiz Raja sustained bullet injuries in their legs in the encounter and are undergoing treatment at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur," Piyush Pandey, Jamshedpur senior superintendent of police (SSP), told the media on Friday.
According to the police, the Bistupur PS officer-in-charge (OC), Alok Dubey, had a narrow escape when one of the kidnappers, Guddu Singh, snatched the carbine of Dubey's bodyguard, Haripado Mahato, and opened indiscriminate fire on the police. A total of 11 rounds were fired during the encounter, of which police fired five rounds.
"Guddu Singh, also known as 'the executive' in the gang, is directly linked to notorious kidnapping gang mastermind Ajay Pratap Singh, currently cooling his heels in Gayani Jail. Both were earlier in the Beur Jail in Patna. Guddu is also known as 'The Executive' in the gang. Rs.56,000 was recovered during a raid at Guddu's house in Lao village in Tekari," a senior police officer said.
The officer further said that the kidnappers had taken Kairav Gandhi to Nawada after kidnapping him from Jamshedpur on January 13. "Then Guddu and Imran, along with three of their associates, took Kairav to the houses of Upendra Singh and Arjun Singh in Sondhi village under Buniyadganj PS in Gayani district of Bihar," the police officer added.
In addition to these three kidnappers from Nalanda, Upendra Singh and Arjun Singh from Sondhi under Buniyadganj PS in Gayani and Mohan Kumar Prasad were arrested from Patna. The police have seized a white SUV with a police sticker, two country-made pistols, four rounds of .315 bullets, and mobile phones.
Meanwhile, SSP Pandey stated that police formed five teams under the leadership of Jamshedpur City SP Kumar Shivashish, which conducted a scientific and professional investigation using technical and human intelligence, as well as CCTV footage.
"The teams contacted police in different states and conducted raids in several states. On January 26, we had a tip-off that the kidnappers were planning to shift Kairav to another location, following which all the teams were alerted and deployed on probable routes. Seeing themselves surrounded by police, the kidnappers left Kairav at the Chouparan-Barhi section on the Grand Trunk Road and fled. Police recovered him safely and handed him over to his family around 4.30 pm on January 27," the SSP added....
