PATNA, Sept. 15 -- The 161-year-old Patna College, the oldest institution under Patna University (PU) ranked 'C' in 2020 due to staff shortage and other factors, will start science stream to align with the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020 to have more multitude-disciplinary colleges. The proposal in this regard, already passed by the academic council, was vetted at the PU syndicate meeting Saturday evening, the day in an unprecedented move Governor Arif Mohammad Khan made a sudden visit to PU to personally take stock of the situation in the light of complaints. Incidentally, Patna College, once known as 'Oxford of the East' due to its quality teaching in arts stream, has for the first time in its history got a principal from science stream from a private UP-based institution, and many of its departments grapple with shortage of faculty members. PU dean of students' welfare Anil Kumar said the college had been asked to prepare a detailed plan. "The proposal passed by the academic council was vetted at the syndicate meeting," he added. However, the main focus was on the surprise inspection of the university office by the chancellor, who went in a simple vehicle without customary insignia of National Emblem and usual convoy, following complaints on "arbitrary approach in selection and removal of guest faculty members" and "V-C's inaccessibility". "When the Governor reached the V-C's office the latter was not there and reached after 20 minutes, as he was at a cremation, and the two had talks on various issues concerning the universities. The V-C explained to him the reasons behind removal of guest faculty after regular appointments and reinstatement of some following Raj Bhawan's order. He also presented problems being faced due to vacant position of pro-VC and general shortage of staff," said a senior university official. V-C Ajay Kumar Singh said the chancellor visited PU to review the working. "I apprised him of the ground situation and the effort the varsity was making for improvement and addressing issues," he added. Some of the student leaders also approached the chancellor with complaint of V-C's inaccessibility and he asked them to visit Raj Bhawan for talks, which they did in the evening. Last month Patna HC had also observed that "the V-Cs, who hold the supreme position in the universities, can solely be responsible for the deteriorating standard of education due to their inaction"....
