12 students fall ill after drinking water from school hand pump
BETTIAH, March 11 -- At least 12 students were hospitalised after they allegedly fell ill after drinking water from a hand pump installed on the premises of a government school in Bihar's West Champaran district on Tuesday.
According to officials, the incident occurred immediately after the morning prayer at Rajkiya Prathamik Vidyalaya at Bhaisahi village which falls under Chanpatia block of West Champaran, where some students complained about uneasiness, stomach ache and started retching
"The students told teachers that they were feeling uneasy after drinking water from the handpump installed on the premises. They were immediately rushed to the local hospital from where they were referred to GMCH for treatment," said Lokesh Kumar Jha, block education officer (BEO), Chanpatia. School's headmistress Mala Kumari named the sick the children as Pinky Kumari (10), Himanshu Kumar (11), Arun Kumar (8), Prince Kumar (10), Shivani Kumari (8), Bittu Kumar (10), Sajan Kumar (10), Simran Kumari (7), Bhola Kumar (10), Vikas Kumar (10), Krishna Kumar (8) and Vishal Kumar (11). They all are residents of Bhainsahi village.
The school authorities brought the matter to the notice of district administration officials, following which the hand pump was discontinued for drinking water consumption. "Superficially, there looks nothing to be suspicious. We have informed the PHED which will soon collect the sample for testing," said BEO Jha....
