'Health remission': Wasseypur gangster set to walk out of jail
Dhanbad, Nov. 9 -- The Jharkhand high court has ordered the release of Wasseypur gangster Faheem Khan, serving a life sentence for the 1989 murder of Sagir Hasan Siddiqui, within six weeks, citing humanitarian and medical grounds, people familiar with the matter said on Saturday.
In a dramatic twist to one of Dhanbad's most infamous underworld tales, justice Anil Kumar Chaudhary passed the order on Friday after Khan, now over the age of 75, filed a writ petition in the high court on November 29, 2024, seeking a remission of his sentence on compassionate grounds.
People familiar with the case said Khan cited deteriorating health, including heart and kidney ailments, and claimed that he had already completed over 22 years of imprisonment, excluding holidays.
Khan is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS, Ranchi, where he has been admitted for the past two months.
Confirming the court's directive, Khan's lawyer Shahbaz said, "The high court has instructed the state government to release Faheem Khan within six weeks. His custody period and health condition were fully considered. The court has acted in accordance with the prison manual and on humanitarian grounds."
He added that over 90 per cent of the cases against Khan have already been disposed of, with only one trial pending and another yet to reach the chargesheet stage.
On May 10, 1989, Sagir Hasan Siddiqui was gunned down in Wasseypur. According to the FIR lodged by Sagir's mother, Faheem Khan shot her son in the head at point-blank range, killing him on the spot. Though a Dhanbad court acquitted Khan in 1991 for lack of evidence, the Patna high court overturned the verdict in 2009 and sentenced him to life imprisonment, a decision later upheld by the Supreme Court in 2011.
Since his conviction, Khan has spent more than 16 years in continuous imprisonment, being shifted between multiple jails, including Hazaribagh, Dumka, Ranchi, Ghaghidih and Jamshedpur. The high court granted him parole twice, once for his son's marriage and again for his daughter's wedding....
