Vaishali wins Candidates, earns shot at world title
Bengaluru, April 16 -- Indian Grandmaster (GM) R Vaishali won the Women's Candidates Tournament on Wednesday to secure a World Chess Championship showdown with reigning champion Ju Wenjun of China.
The 24-year-old entered the final round tied for the lead with Kazakhstan's Bibisara Assaubayeva on 7.5 points. Vaishali won her final game to finish the tournament with 8.5 points, edging past Assaubayeva by half a point after the Kazakh player was held to a draw by Indian Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh in the last round.
