Kolkata, March 8 -- Union ministers led by Amit Shah on Saturday slammed West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, accusing them of "insulting" President Droupadi Murmu and "disregarding" protocol during her visit to the state. In a post on X, Shah said the ruling TMC "has sunk to new lows today through their anarchic conduct". "By showing utter disregard for protocol, they have insulted the President of India," he said in Bengali, adding that the incident has brought to light the "deep rot within the Trinamool government". Shah's remarks came hours after President Murmu questioned the development of tribal people in West Bengal and expressed disappointment over the handling of a Santhal community event, including the venue being changed. She also flagged that Banerjee or any state minister did not attend the event even though it was fixed much earlier. Respect for the President is not ceremonial courtesy, it reflects our collective respect for the Constitution and the people she represents, said defence minister Rajnath Singh. "By choosing arrangements that distanced the Santhal community from their own international gathering, the TMC Government has not only disregarded the sentiments of tribal society but also undermined the dignity of the highest constitutional office of the nation," he said on X. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the protocol violation "tantamounts to a brazen abuse of the highest office in India". "The angst expressed by respected @rashtrapatibhvn is rare and full of deep pain. It is unprecedented," she said on X....
