Pune/Nashik, April 3 -- A Nashik court on Thursday remanded godman Ashok Kharat to a week's police custody in a abuse case alleging forced termination of pregnancy and coercion. The Special Investigation Team, which arrested Kharat from Nashik Central Jail on Wednesday, told the court interrogation was essential to probe the abortion angle, source of pills and alleged threats to the survivor.
Chief judicial magistrate B N Icpurani granted the remand, noting the gravity of offences and need for investigation. Kharat was already in custody in an earlier case registered on March 17. The prosecution said the complainant, a married mother of two, had been in contact with Kharat since 2020 over marital issues. It alleged repeated rape and that when she became pregnant in January, Kharat gave her pills causing termination.
Investigators are probing how the medication was procured. The defence opposed remand, citing repetition and delays, but the court allowed continued interrogation....
