Mumbai, Feb. 7 -- Mumbai's decision to bat first on a pitch that offered a fair bit for the fast bowlers backfired rather dramatically, as Karnataka bundled them out for just 120 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-finals at the MCA-BKC ground here on Friday. At stumps, the visitors had motored along to 110/2 in 26 overs, with a significant first-innings lead in the offing despite losing KL Rahul and captain Devdutt Padikkal. The Mumbai batting, without the presence of Sarfaraz Khan who sat out due to illness, stumbled from being 70/3 at lunch to 78/6 soon after as India pacer Prasidh Krishna (3/21) ripped through the middle order. Before that, the early damage was done by Vidwath Kaverappa (3/38) and Vidyadhar Patil. The latter got India Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal caught behind with a beauty that nipped away, while the tall Kaverappa found the outside edge of No.3 Musheer Khan. After Mumbai stabilised a bit, Krishna got into the act in the second session. Bowling his typical hard lengths while extracting the extra bounce that the wicket offered, he dismissed Suryansh Shedge, Akash Anand and Shams Mulani, the last two off back-to-back deliveries. "There was a bit in the pitch," Krishna, who bowled first change, said after the day's play. "We started off well, and that let me come in. There was extra bounce...but that bounce wasn't consistent." Only opener Akhil Herwadkar (60, 130b), and to a certain extent Shardul Thakur who made a brisk 27-ball 16, offered any kind of resistance for the 42-time champions. Running out of partners, Herwadkar was the last man out to leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, who also picked up three wickets while cleaning up the tail. Rahul got off to a start (28, 26b) before Mohit Avasthi curtailed his stay. Padikkal, coming off a blazing century that ensured his team made the knockouts, was also looking good until a fine delivery by Shedge found his outside edge, dismissing him for 28 runs. Brief scores: Mumbai 120 (Akhil Herwadkar 60; Shreyas Gopal 3/4, Prasidh Krishna 3/21, Vidwath Kaverappa 3/38) vs Karnataka 110/2 (Mayank Agarwal 54)....
