MUMBAI, Feb. 12 -- A day after Soham Kathare, 18, fell from an overcrowded local train between Kalwa and Mumbra, railway passenger associations organised a ceremony to pay homage to the teen at Thane station on Wednesday, for which only three people turned up. "It is clear that people do not care about such accidents anymore. They only wish to reach their offices on time," said Nandkumar Deshmukh, president, Federation of Suburban Rail Passengers Associations who was present at Thane station. A protest march which was to be held at Dombivli on Thursday to call the attention of authorities on the problem of overcrowding, has been cancelled. "The march will be held at a later date as the deceased's family is away from Mumbai. We will meet political leaders, and at some point, also the chief minister to bring to his attention the problems commuters face every day. The state government needs to implement staggered work timings which might help in reducing crowd in local trains," said Lata Argade, president of Tejaswini Mahila Passenger Association. The seven stations between Thane and Thakurli see a daily footfall of over 5.60 lakh commuters, which is nearly 16-17 percent of 36 lakh on the Central and Harbour lines. On the Central Railway route, Thane, Diva and Dombivli stations see over a lakh footfall daily....
