five judges' homes among 9 burgled in Amravati
NAGPUR, Feb. 17 -- A major theft has been reported from a judges' residential colony in Amravati in western Vidarbha, raising serious concerns about law and order in the district. According to reports received on Monday, unidentified thieves broke into nine houses around midnight on Sunday in the Kantanagar area-five of these belonging to judges and four to court staff members. Three judges' residences in Naldamyanti Colony and two in the Painganga building were targeted. Additionally, four houses of court employees located in a residential complex behind the judges' colony were also burgled.
Despite heavy police deployment in the area, the thieves allegedly conducted a prior reconnaissance and selectively targeted locked houses. They reportedly scaled the rear compound wall with the help of nearby bushes, gained entry into the premises, and later escaped the same way.
The intruders forced open doors and broke cupboards, decamping with gold ornaments and cash. Preliminary estimates place the total value of stolen property from the judges and judicial staff colonies at approximately Rs 1.27 lakh. The incident has created a stir in the city and raised serious questions about the existing security arrangements.
A case has been registered against three unidentified men based on a complaint lodged by Athar Ali Ejaz Ali Beg, a policeman who was on duty at the time of the incident. Police are scrutinising CCTV footage to identify the culprits.
The footage reportedly shows three men, aged between 25 and 35 years, carrying out the thefts. Although the police attempted to apprehend them, the suspects managed to flee by jumping over the compound wall and escaping into nearby wooded areas.
