CBI nabs MES duo over Rs.2l bribery case
MUMBAI, Feb. 8 -- The CBI on Thursday has arrested two Military Engineering Services (MES) officers in Pune in an alleged Rs. 2 lakh bribery case, involving the clearance of payments due to a private contractor firm.
The accused have been identified as Sunil Nikam, assistant garrison engineer, MES, Khadki and Suresh Mhaske, junior engineer, MES, Khadki. The CBI set up a trap and caught Mhaske red-handed while accepting a bribe from the complainant, who holds the firm's power of attorney. Nikam was also booked for his alleged involvement in the crime. Searches conducted at the residential and office premises of the accused led to the recovery of documents and unexplained cash of Rs.1, 88,500.
The case was registered after the contractor complained of a Rs.6-lakh bribe demand. After negotiation, the accused officials had allegedly agreed to accept Rs.2 lakh as the first instalment of the bribe. Despite completing the works and submitting completion certificates, payments were allegedly withheld to coerce the contractor to pay the bribe....
