Can't speak Marathi? Drivers set to lose licences from May 1
MUMBAI, April 15 -- From May 1, auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers and permit holders will have to prove they are fluent in Marathi if they want to hold onto their licences.
The directive was announced by state transport minister and Shiv Sena leader Pratap Sarnaik on Tuesday. Sarnaik said the RTO will launch a state-wide verification drive "to ensure drivers can effectively read, write and speak Marathi". Those who fail the Marathi test will have their licences and permits cancelled.
