Pune, April 10 -- The Baramati assembly bypoll has virtually turned into a cakewalk for NCP candidate and deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar after the Congress withdrew from the contest on Thursday, though 22 other candidates remain in the fray. On Wednesday and Thursday, as many as 30 candidates withdrew their nominations. A total of 55 contestants had filed their nominations; those in the fray are mostly independents with no strong base. While a contest will technically take place, none of the remaining candidates is seen as posing a significant challenge to the Pawar family bastion. Speaking on the developments, Sunetra Pawar's younger son, Jay Pawar, said the party had made efforts to reach a consensus. "We tried to approach most contestants and many have withdrawn, but we couldn't reach some, and they are still in the fray," he said. "Sunetra Pawar will, as per tradition, visit the Maruti temple at Kanehri and we will sit there for some time."...
