Bill tabled, 60 days' notice mandatory for conversion
Mumbai, March 14 -- The Mahayuti government on Friday tabled the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill in the state assembly to curb unlawful religious conversions, with a key provision mandating a 60-day prior notice to authorities by anyone intending to convert or organise a conversion ceremony.
"The objective is to protect the right to freedom of religion. It also aims to prohibit unlawful religious conversions carried out through coercion, fraud, inducement or marriage," said Minister of State for home Pankaj Bhoyar, who introduced the bill in the assembly.
The Bill is expected to be taken up for discussion on Monday amid backlash from opposition parties.
The 'Love Jihad' law makes unlawful religious conversion a cognisable and non-bailable offence, with punishment of up to seven years' imprisonment. The most contentious provision is the 60-day notice to be given by the person intending to convert.
The notice must be given to the designated authority, or the district collector, whose permission must be secured to switch faiths. Further, the conversion must be registered with the authority within 21 days, or it will be considered null and void. P5...
