auto driver held for killing and robbing passenger; cites financial stress
NAVI MUMBAI, Feb. 15 -- A 27-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was arrested on Friday for allegedly stabbing and robbing a woman passenger earlier this week. Police said the accused cited financial stress with a monthly EMI burden of Rs.40,000 as the motive behind the crime.
The accused, Akshay Eknath Bagade, allegedly attacked Sangita Bhoir, 36, on February 11 after stopping his auto near the Satya Trident building in Sector 04 on the pretext of a mechanical issue.
He then stabbed her, inflicting multiple injuries to her neck, chest and leg.
"After the assault, the accused fled the spot with her gold mangalsutra, chain, mobile phone and cash. A case was immediately registered," said Senior Police Inspector Nitin Thakare, Panvel City Police Station.
Police formed four special teams that scanned CCTV footage, carried out technical surveillance and worked on input from an eyewitness who noted the last four digits of the vehicle's registration number.
Bagade was detained from Karanjade.
During interrogation, he allegedly confessed that mounting financial stress, on account of unpaid EMIs, pushed him to plan the robbery.
The vehicle used for the crime was registered under his father's name, police said.
Police have seized the auto-rickshaw and recovered the stolen mangalsutra. The victim is undergoing medical treatment....
