14-year-old drowns in restricted lake in Virar
MUMBAI, Feb. 21 -- A 14-year-old boy drowned in the Ram Mandir lake in Virar West on Thursday afternoon after allegedly entering the restricted premises with three friends for a swim.
The deceased has been identified as Arnav Vinayak Patil, a Class 8 student and son of a local autorickshaw driver.
According to the Bolinj police, the lake falls under the jurisdiction of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) and is currently closed to the general public with a fence surrounding the entire premises.
Despite this, Arnav and three of his friends managed to access the lake and jumped into the water.
While his friends managed to swim back to the shore, Arnav is believed to have misjudged the depth and failed to resurface, police said.
His friends alerted nearby residents, who contacted the police and fire brigade.
A search operation was launched, which lasted nearly three hours, before Arnav's body was recovered on Thursday evening.
Senior police inspector Marshal Lopes of the Bolinj police station, civic officials, and local representatives were present during the rescue efforts, police said.
Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and are probing the circumstances of the incident, including whether the deceased knew how to swim....
