Thane, Feb. 2 -- A 12-year-old boy from Bhiwandi who was bitten by a stray dog on January 10 died on Saturday, nearly three weeks after the incident. The boy, identified as Hamid Khan, lived with his family at Eidgah Maidan. Hamid's parents alleged that the Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in Bhiwandi failed to provide proper treatment and did not have anti-rabies vaccines. Hospital authorities denied the allegations. According to the family, Hamid was playing outside his house when a stray dog attacked him, biting him on the face and chest. He was immediately taken to IGM Hospital, where doctors administered initial treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Thane Civil Hospital. Hamid was admitted to Thane Civil Hospital for a few days, but his parents later brought him back to IGM Hospital as they were unable to afford the daily travel to Thane. His condition worsened on January 28 and he was rushed to IGM Hospital, then Thane Civil Hospital andKasturba Hospital in Mumbai. After the incident, Samajwadi Party MLA from Bhiwandi Rais Shaikh visited the IGM Hospital and questioned its ability to treat patients. He stated that there have been several complaints about the hospital lacking medicines and that its primary function appears to be referring patients to Thane Civil Hospital. Shaikh added that he would raise the issue in the upcoming state assembly session and demand a thorough investigation into the hospital staff responsible for the maintenance of medicines and facilities. Responding to the allegations, Dr. Madhavi Pandhare, superintendent of the IGM Hospital, Bhiwandi, however told HT, "The boy was administered all the required vaccines, including anti-rabies, tetanus, immunoglobulin, and other antibodies, during his visits to the hospital on January 10, 13, and 17." Dr. Pandhare added that since the dog bite was near the brain, on the face, the rabies virus infected the brain, leading to the boy's death. She denied allegations that the hospital lacked anti-rabies or other vaccines....
