Wanted gangster held after police encounter in Pratapgarh
PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 19 -- A man wanted under the Gangsters Act was injured and arrested after an encounter with police in Pratapgarh, officials said on Wednesday. The incident occurred near the ATL Ground, within the Kotwali Dehat police station limits, during a routine vehicle checking drive on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Circle officer (City) Shiv Narayan Vyas said station house officer(SHO) Pushpraj Singh and his team were checking vehicles when the accused, Atul Gaur alias Raja ,29, a resident of Bhupiyamau, allegedly opened fire at the police. Police returned fire and Gaur was shot in the leg. Authorities later overpowered him and took him into custody. A country-made pistol along with live and spent cartridges was recovered from him. Police said he was admitted to a medical college hospital for treatment. Gaur was carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 and was wanted under the Gangsters Act.
Officials added that he has 38 criminal cases registered against him in Pratapgarh, Sultanpur and Jaunpur. The cases include charges of theft, robbery, attempt to murder, fraud and violations of the Arms Act....
