Varanasi to attempt record tree plantation drive
VARANASI, Feb. 27 -- A Guinness World Record attempt will be made in Domri village of Varanasi on March 1 by planting three lakh saplings within one hour. The drive aims to develop a forest spread across 350 bighas of land.
Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari held a meeting with councillors, inspected the site and reviewed preparations. He asked corporators to reach Domri on March 1 with at least 50 supporters each.
Earlier, he conducted a joint inspection with officials from the district administration and the Varanasi Nagar Nigam.
"Our resolve to make Varanasi a Smart City as well as a Green City is now taking shape. The Domri campaign will become a mass movement and gift clean air to future generations," the Mayor said.
Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said 350 bighas in Domri are being developed into a large forest area. Traditional trees such as neem, peepal, pakad and banyan will be planted. A herbal park and a Nakshatra Vatika will also be developed.
Nagpal said the initiative is not only about creating a record. He said the large-scale plantation will help reduce the city's temperature and control dust pollution. It is also expected to improve Varanasi's ranking in the Clean Air Survey....
