LUCKNOW, Feb. 20 -- A photography exhibition 'Soul of Kashi: A Monochrome' was inaugurated by artist Subodh Gupta at Kokoro art gallery here on Thursday. Unlike how Varanasi is depicted in the photographs one finds on the internet-full of colours- photographer Shailendra Kumar has tried to bring the charm of the city in monochrome (developed or executed in black and white or in varying tones of only one colour). As many as 110 photographs are neatly displayed in the exhibition. They include 86 comparatively smaller prints of Kashi ghats and other creative photographs where each one narrates a unique emotion. The exhibition will remain open for viewers till March 20. Kumar, who is based in Patna, said that he was in his final year of graduation in fine arts from Patna University in 1984 when he began his journey as a photographer. "For around seven years, I used to borrow a camera from one of my friends. It was also in 1984 when after being advised by several people, I visited Varanasi for the first time," he added. "I got a digital camera after 2007, so most of the photographs were saved in the form of negatives. That's why, I decided to capture new photographs in monochrome as well." The exhibition is curated by Vandana Sehgal, Dean, College of Architecture and Planning of AKTU. She said one of the prints displayed in the exhibition is of 1984 which consists of a portion of a ghat which has been lost over the years....
