UPP-Meta alert system saves 2,266 lives since '23
Lucknow, March 21 -- A technology-driven initiative of the Uttar Pradesh Police in collaboration with Meta has helped save 2,266 lives between January 1, 2023 and March 15, 2026, officials said. They highlighted the scale of intervention in preventing suicides through real-time social media monitoring through a press note shared by state police headquarters on Friday.
The system, operational since 2022, enables Meta to flag suicide-related content posted on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. Alerts are sent via email and phone to the police headquarters' social media centre, which then coordinates with district police units for immediate on-ground response.
In the latest instances on March 19, two more lives were saved within 24 hours following such alerts. In Sultanpur district, a 19-year-old woman posted a video on Instagram showing herself consuming poison along with a message expressing a desire to die. The alert was received at 6:55 pm, following which police traced her location and reached her residence within 15 minutes.
She was found in distress and was immediately provided first aid before being taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated and later discharged. During counselling, she cited personal relationship stress as the reason behind her actions.
In a separate case in Kaushambi district, an 18-year-old youth posted a video stating his intention to end his life. The alert was received at 1:12 pm, and police reached his home within 10 minutes, preventing the attempt. He later told police that a family dispute had led to emotional distress. He was counselled and is now safe. Officials said the initiative has significantly strengthened the state's emergency response framework, allowing swift intervention in cases of acute distress flagged on social media. They said timely action, aided by technology and coordination, continues to play a crucial role in saving lives....
