UPCA guidelines on players have leagues scrambling
LUCKNOW, Feb. 11 -- With the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association announcing stricter guidelines for holding district premier leagues, the Cricket Association of Lucknow said on Tuesday which will only allow two players from outside the district in the 20-player squads of teams for its inaugural tournament.
That means from among the 43 players who are from outside the region, including regulars of different Uttar Pradesh teams in the board trophies, the six franchises will be allowed to pick only 12 in all.
However, the owner of a franchise said one will have to reconsider his investment on the team: "In such a scenario the LPL (Lucknow Premier League) will become a local event like the leagues of CAL."
"This will rob the charm of the league and no one will turn up to watch the same cricketer who they have been watching for long," he said. The franchises will meet on Wednesday to discuss the issue.
The auction for LPL held in January saw players like UP Ranji Trophy skipper Aryan Juyal, ex-Ranji skipper Karan Sharma, Rituraj Sharma, Prashant Choudhary etc. drafted into teams. These players may now have to be dropped.
The LPL organisers announced a restructuring of the league. "Players who appear for trials in Lucknow will be considered local. Even if players are from outside Lucknow but are registered here and participate in selection trials for competitions, they will be considered Lucknow residents. If a local player appears for trials after registering in another district, they will not be considered Lucknow residents," a release added.
Other UP district units too have announced franchise-based leagues in coming months and will be affected by the state association's directive. "Before imposing the guidelines on district cricket associations, UPCA should apply this on its UPT20 League where even players from other states have been part of franchises," said an organiser of the Muzzafarnagar Premier League on condition of anonymity.
UPCA secretary Prem Manohar Gupta said action would be taken against franchises of the UPT20 League if cricketers from other states were chosen in the next edition. "We will take strict action, if someone was found fielding outsiders in a team," he said on Tuesday....
