Meerut, Feb. 13 -- An interfaith wedding in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district has been called off after police registered a case against the groom after the bride's uncle filed a complaint of wrongful religious conversion bid against him, police said. Akanksha Gautam (29) and Shahvez Rana (25) were set to get married on February 13. The complaint, submitted by Prem Chand, alleged that Shahvez had hidden his "real name" on the wedding card, and that it was part of "Love Jihad." Aided by members of Hindu right-wing outfits, a complaint was filed. An FIR was registered on February 9 against the groom at the Ganga Nagar police station under BNS Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation) and Sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion (Amendment) Act. "I have already given my statement to the police. Sahil (Shahvez) and I are adults and wish to marry of our own free will. However, my uncle, along with some members of right-wing organisations, is trying to obstruct our wedding. The FIR has been filed on the basis of false allegations," Akanksha Gautam told HT. "We are under pressure and concerned about our safety. The wedding planned for the 13th has been cancelled." SP (Rural) Abhijeet Kumar said, "The couple had applied under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, before the additional district magistrate (City), but the application has not yet been approved. An FIR has been registered based on the complaint received, and a probe is on."...
