LUCKNOW, Jan. 25 -- Even before the two umpires called for an early end of play due to the bad light on Saturday evening, it was all over for hosts Uttar Pradesh in their Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match against Jharkhand here in Lucknow. With just three wickets in hand, UP were tottering at 69/7 in their second innings after scoring just 176 in the first innings at stumps on the penultimate day of their four-day encounter. It seems almost impossible for Aryan Juyal and Co to put Jharkhand bat again as they still need 317 runs to go past Jharkhand's first innings total of 561/6 with only a day to go in the match. UP lost 14 wickets on a slow turf of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium where the visitors dominated with all the Jharkhand batters making full use of a toothless bowling attack after being put to bat first. In fact, inviting Jharkhand to bat first on this surface even after winning the toss proved costly for the hosts. The pitch looked good for batting even when UP batters came to the middle while following-on, having conceded a 385-run first innings lead, but no one showed any resistance before a disciplined Jharkhand bowling attack. The right-arm pace bowling quartet of Sahil Raj (2/20), Jatin Pandey (2/27), Saurabh Shekhar (2/6) and Shubham Kumar Singh (1/1) kept troubling UP batters from the very first ball in the second innings with swinging and short pitched deliveries. Opener Abhishek Goswami, who showed a good intent in the first innings with a fine half-century, miscued on the third ball of the second over only to see Aryaman Sen taking an easy catch. Soon, keeper-batter Aditya Sharma (2) was caught brilliantly by Robin Minz off in the second slip as UP's slide began. Priyam Garg (9) and Siddarth Yadav (16) departed in quick succession, but it was Shekhar who dealt the real blow on UP, removing Aryan Juyal (24) and Shivam Mavi (0) off consecutive deliveries in the 18th over. First, he trapped Juyal leg before wicket with a quick inswinger, before forcing Mavi to drag a delivery from outside the off stumps onto his stumps. Shivam Sharma (0) then offered a simple catch to Roy at slip off Kumar Singh. Madhav Kaushik (9) and Vipraj (1) were the last recognised batting pair at the crease at the draw of stumps on Saturday evening. Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 3/24, Uttar Pradesh batters continued to struggle and barring Abhishek Goswami, no other batter could show any resistance. UP lost their first wicket on Saturday in the form of Shivam Sharma (28, 47b, 6x4), and thereafter wickets kept tumbling like nine pins. Goswami's 168-ball 85, which contained 13 boundaries and a six, was his third first-class half-century as well as second in the season in his 11th match. It was Shubham Kumar Singh, who destroyed UP's first innings with 4/47, whereas Jatin Pandey finished with 3/32. Sahil Raj, Anukul Roy and Saurabh Shekhar shared three wickets between them....
