UP lose in Vijay Merchant Trophy quarterfinal
LUCKNOW, Jan. 15 -- Finally, Uttar Pradesh's journey in the Under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy came to an end on Wednesday as rivals Mumbai marched into the semi-finals on the basis of a huge 498 runs first innings lead, at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Anand. Nothing was left for Uttar Pradesh on the final day of the four-day quarterfinal, especially after Mumbai's huge first innings lead, and they scored 164/5 in their second innings when the match ended in a tame draw after 45 overs.
Resuming at the overnight score of 183/4 on Wednesday, Mumbai declared their second innings at 260/6 in 67 overs, leaving no chance for Uttar Pradesh to achieve a 759-run winning target on the final day of the match. Mumbai had declared their first innings at 633/8 before skittled out Uttar Pradesh for paltry 135 in the first innings.
On Wednesday, Harish Shailesh Kadam struck 71-ball 45 with the help of eight hits to the fence, whereas Arjun Gadoya made 41 in 61 balls with the help of six boundaries. Karthik Kumar (24, 25b, 4x4) and Vedant Gore (14, 30b, 3x4) were unbeaten when Mumbai declared their second innings.
In their second innings, Uttar Pradesh lost two quick wickets for just 11 in 4.2 overs as both skipper Aalok Kumar (5) and Rudra Veer (1) were bowled by Siddhant in his consecutive overs.
Keeper-batter Hitesh Kumar struck 44-ball 76 with the help of 14 boundaries and two sixes, whereas Kamran Ali made 36-ball 31 with the help of five boundaries.
Arush Gupta (20) and Anay Awasthi (13) were at the crease when the two umpires decided to end the game with no result in sight. Besides Siddhant, who took 2/17, Advait Bhat, Nikhil Verma and Aayush Shinde shared two wickets between them for Mumbai.
The 3rd Pandit Ram Autar Mishra Memorial Sub-Junior Hockey Tournament will be played from January 15 to 18, at the Chandra Bhan Gupt Ground here. The tournament will be played on league-cum-knock-out basis. In all six teams including Gandhi Club, Pt Ram Autar Misra XI, Jaman Lal Sharma XI, KD Singh Babu XI, Bula Ganguli XI and Mohd Shahid XI have confirmed their participation, states organising secretary, Rakesh Tondon.
With two consecutive wins, favourites Lucknow stormed into the final of the 3x3 Senior State Basketball Championship in Ghaziabad on Wednesday. In the quarter-final match, Lucknow defeated Hathras 19-15 in a closely contested game before outplaying hosts Ghaziabad 20-16 in the semi-final. Cagers like Pulkit Sachdeva, Ashwini Gupta, Vijay Parmar, and Arjun Pandey, displayed excellent teamwork, speed, and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
