U.P. voters may send a nominee to sir hearing
New Delhi, Jan. 23 -- Uttar Pradesh is set to roll out a new facility to ease the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing process of electoral rolls, allowing voters to authorise any person, including booth level agents of political parties, to attend hearings on their behalf and submit documents digitally.
The order is expected to be issued on Friday, officials aware of the matter said, and similar measures are likely to be adopted by other states in the coming weeks.
Under the proposed framework, electors who receive notices during the SIR process will be permitted to authorise another individual to represent them at hearings.
The authorised person may submit the required documents by sharing them with the booth level officer (BLO) or by uploading them on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The move follows directions issued by the Supreme Court aimed at reducing hardship faced by voters during verification.
The proposed changes by Uttar Pradesh mirror steps already taken by West Bengal earlier this month that was announced on January 8 in a notification.
In a memo sent to all District Election Officers, the Additional Chief Electoral Officer of UP said electors temporarily outside the state would not be required to attend hearings in person....
