Two student bodies take out march in support of UGC equity rules
LUCKNOW, Feb. 4 -- Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) and the Students' Federation of India (SFI) on Tuesday marched here in support of UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026.
The BAPSA took out its march at the Lucknow University. It began from LU's Gate No 3 and proceeded to Parivartan Chowk in which a large number of students, youth, and social activists participated. They were detained by police and sent to Eco Garden.
The aim was to raise demands for social equality in higher educational institutions, protection of student rights and effective implementation of SC-ST-OBC reservations. Participants collectively claimed that the UGC Guidelines 2026 are a necessary and a historic step towards reducing institutional discrimination prevalent in universities.
Addressing the gathering, BAPSA's LU unit president Manav Rawat alleged: "Not Found Suitable (NFS) practice has been used as a weapon to deliberately exclude qualified and eligible candidates from reserved categories. This is not merely an administrative irregularity but a direct violation of the Constitution, social justice, and the ideals of Babasaheb Dr B.R. Ambedkar. If this system is not changed, our movement will be intensified."
During the march, the students raised slogans and urged the Centre and the UGC to stop discriminatory selection processes and strictly implement constitutional provisions related to social justice.
SFI's Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, unit also took out a march in support of UGC regulations. Sapan, secretary, SFI, BBAU unit, demanded that committees mentioned in the UGC Act should comprise elected student representatives through elections instead of nominees appointed by professors.
