Two leopard cubs found dead in Katarniaghat div
Bahraich, Feb. 16 -- Two leopard cubs were found dead in the Motipur Range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division in Bahraich on Sunday. The cubs, found lying in an agricultural field, bore deep injury marks, raising suspicions about the circumstances surrounding their death.
According to forest officials, the bodies were spotted in fields located between Adgoudwa and Mangoudhiya gram panchayats. Local residents immediately alerted the Motipur Range office following the grim discovery. Acting swiftly, forest range officer (RFO) Surendra Nath Tiwari reached the spot along with his team and initiated preliminary inquiries.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, RFO Tiwari said the cubs were around seven months old - one male and one female. Villagers reported spotting an adult leopard in the vicinity, and prominent scratch marks were observed on a nearby tree.
"Evidence suggests the cubs may have tried to climb the tree to escape an attack, but were overpowered," Tiwari said. He noted that territorial conflicts or infanticide by an adult leopard are possible explanations in such cases, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
A team of veterinary doctors has been constituted to conduct a detailed postmortem examination. The exact cause of death will be ascertained only after the postmortem report is received....
